In my most recent paintings I've been exploring the idea of memory and the past, change and the effect of chance events. The opportunity to investigate these concepts has come in the very act of painting itself, using a technique that allows me to layer and peel away, erase, reveal and add --- in the same way that time itself does all these things. This act of painting, the dialogue with the canvas itself, is my true and only inspiration. In earlier work I have explored the painting as object --- the painting as its own dynamic physical presence. I have worked sculpturally, freely exploring the possibilities of using more than just conventional paint on canvas. And so, much of my work has incorporated unconventional materials --- bulgur wheat, clay, wood, wire, fabric, rope, thread, pumice stone, sand and polysterene. |
